Standard grid squares
Japanese statistics use a grid of squares defined by latitude and longitude: the first level is 40′ × 1° (4 digits), the second 5′ × 7′30″ (6 digits) and the basic 1 km square 30″ × 45″ (8 digits), split again into half (500 m) and quarter (250 m) squares numbered 1 (SW) to 4 (NE).
The converter shows the 1 km and 250 m codes, checked against the cell limits published by the Statistics Bureau of Japan and e-Stat.
Frequently asked questions
Does the mesh code use JGD2011 or WGS 84?
It is defined on the Japanese datum (JGD2011), which agrees with WGS 84 to well under a metre, far less than the size of a mesh.
