Zone and units come from the original survey
SPCS 27 combines a NAD27 datum with a separate projection for each state or state zone. The systems offered here use US survey feet: one US survey foot is exactly 1200/3937 metres. The number pair is easting followed by northing; the unit is shown beside the result.
SPCS 27 and SPCS 83 do not have identical zone layouts. California has a separate zone VII for Los Angeles County in SPCS 27; Montana, Nebraska and South Carolina also have historical subdivisions. Select the zone stated on the plan rather than assuming its modern counterpart.
Datum conversion and verification
The projection is followed by the NADCON datum transformation where the official grid covers the point. Grid accuracy is catalogued at 0.15 m for CONUS and 0.5 m for Alaska; fallback parameters are less accurate. Published NGS geographic coordinate pairs test the NAD27 datum conversion. There is not a dedicated published projection control set for every SPCS 27 zone.
Keep the original datum and units when importing a spreadsheet. A metre value interpreted as US survey feet changes the position substantially, and a wrong zone can still yield plausible-looking numbers.
Source and limitations
Zone definitions come from the EPSG registry; datum grids come from NOAA NGS. Hawaii and Puerto Rico used other historical datums and are not included in this NAD27 family.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the automatically suggested zone?
Confirm it against the survey metadata, especially where zones overlap. The historical county boundaries can differ from the modern SPCS 83 layout.
